Charting Progress and Collaborative Growth: Global.health's Journey of 2023 and Outlook for 2024
In 2023, Marburg kept our curation team busy, and raised global awareness for the growing risk of animal-to-human spillover events. This was the first time that there were two concurrent Marburg Virus Disease outbreaks in Africa - Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania. These outbreaks presented an opportunity for Global.health to gather feedback from the community and learn more about contextual information collected to support emergent outbreak response and to better understand challenges in tracking viral hemorrhagic fever outbreaks.
We share openly with the community - our datasets, processes, and lessons learned - to promote transparency and collaboration. As we move into 2024, we want to decrease the time it takes to share data and make it openly accessible. Investment and engagement in our community brings us closer to a collaborative approach to data integration.
The Global.health team is involved in many different projects, community engagement, and initiatives to plan, prepare, and respond to emerging infectious disease threats. To highlight a few, in 2023, we participated in: WHO’s Data Preparedness Community of Practice; launch of the Oxford Pandemic Sciences Institute; and WHO’s International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN). We presented our research and tools at public health conferences (RKI), participated in working groups to build global data resources, and workshops to support training and capacity building (VEME2023). We are on the cutting edge of industry advances in AI for Infectious Disease Surveillance (NEJM), developing tools to reduce curator burden and gain public health insights. And we’re tackling tough questions around how to approach data integration and predictive modeling for climate-driven disease outbreaks in vulnerable regions.
We are making progress towards preparedness in support of our mission: “to enable rapid sharing of trusted and open public health data to advance the response to infectious diseases.” Our goal is to cultivate a global community invested in improving health outcomes for all through open and secure data sharing built on accessible, sustainable technology.
2024 is a year of growth for our research, platform, partnerships… and team!
